Riek Sanderse

The ceramics of Riek Sanderse find their origin in the sea – with fish, coral and fossils as main sources of inspiration. Her ceramics started as manta-shaped objects and have since evolved into simple, rounded ‘sea stones’ and ‘sea bowls’.

The objects are hand-shaped from chamotte clay, which adds a gritty, rustic texture. Together with the rich natural chromatic spectrum that she uses to colour the sea stones, different layers of engobes (liquid clay slips of varying compositions which are applied to the surface) combine to make tactile forms that seem to float with an almost supernatural balance.
